Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic EmergenciesTrue orthodontic emergencies are very rare, so most times you don’t need to worry! But if a serious orthodontic emergency does occur, like any severe injury or trauma to your mouth, teeth, or gums, we are here to help. If you are ever experiencing severe pain or discomfort in your teeth, mouth, face, or neck, please do not hesitate to call our office.

The good news is that these major emergencies do not happen often. It is more common to encounter minor issues with your braces that you can solve temporarily until your next visit in the office.

Below are some helpful tips and tricks to provide comfort and care for minor problems until your next visit with us!

Loose or broken bands and brackets: If a band or bracket is still attached to your wire, leave it in place. If it is uncomfortable, place wax on it. If a bracket comes off completely, wrap the bracket in tissue and save it until your next appointment. Call our office to let us know, and we can see you as soon as possible to fix your bracket!

Loose or irritating wire: If you have a loose wire, you can try to place it back in place with sterilized tweezers. You can also clip the wire with fingernail clippers behind the last tooth that is securely fastened with the wire. You can always place wax on the affected area too to provide comfort for irritation.

Missing colored band: Don’t worry! Just notify us as your next appointment.

Soreness: If you feel tender or sore during treatment, use warm saltwater rinses and/or Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

True orthodontic emergencies are rare but do happen. Please contact our office if you find yourself in an orthodontic situation. We are committed to providing comfort and care throughout the entirety of your orthodontic experience with us.
